Ross London scores 9 minute first half hat trick and hits last minute winner to keep Saints top of the table.

St Newlyn East started on the front foot against an in-form Looe side who had yet to lose a game in the St Piran League. Having lost yet another key player due to injury from their previous match in the form of Harry Mugford, Newlyn were especially grateful to be able to include Sam Eglinton back in the squad as Will Perry was also an absentee for this key fixture.

It took Newlyn just 7 minutes to open the scoring when top goal scorer Ross London won a ball that was headed on by Dan Ball and danced past three defenders before placing a low shot across the goalkeeper and into the bottom left corner of the net.

London added his second on 10 minutes with a powerful finish from close range. Sean Kinsella drove forward from right back and found Russell Brooker whose precision pass inside to defenders was met by the onrushing Jay Manning who crossed low for London to finish.

The away team pulled a goal back against the run of play when a Looe shot was blocked on the edge of the penalty area by Ash Bradshaw only for the ball to ricochet into the air ad loop fortuitously to the feet of Kombostiotis who finished over Prentice from 12 yards.

Newlyn reacted immediately to restore their two-goal advantage when London picked up a pass from Jake Watson who had disposed a Looe player. London turned around 35 yards from goal and surged forward whilst being closed down by three defenders. Before they could get close London unleased a rocket from the edge of the area that flew into the top corner.

For all their excellent play and domination in the first 25 minutes Newlyn allowed Looe to take control for the remainder of the half and the visitors were rewarded with two goals before the interval. The first coming following a low cross from the right that saw Wilmott react quickest to score from close and the second when a powerful shot from distance cannoned back of a post to the onrushing Doney to tap home into an empty net.

The second half saw Newlyn regain their composure and football that had saw them play so well in the opening period of the game. Jay Manning saw his shot across the goal saved by the goalkeeper’s outstretched boot after an hour. Five minutes later and London saw his shot well saved.

As the game seemed to be heading towards a draw Newlyn made a final and decisive breakthrough. Playing the ball out from defence Dan Ball powered forward on the right wing and passed the ball out wide to Manning who raced past the defender before crossing into the near post where the magnificent London raced into the area to score with his left foot inside the near post in the 90th minute.

A frantic last few minutes saw a final goalmouth scramble from a Looe corner cleared by Newlyn following a superb diving save from Prentice.

The result sees Newlyn maintain their unbeaten run of games in the league as they head into a midweek derby fixture against Newquay though their ever growing list of injured players is becoming a cause of concern.
