SAINTS SCORE SIX OF THE BEST FOR THIRD WIN!

SAINTS SCORE SIX OF THE BEST FOR THIRD WIN!

Saints Sports News14 Aug 2024 - 13:56

Newlyn seal derby win with emphatic second half performance. Ross, Owen, Jay and Ash all on target for Saints.

St Newlyn East made it three wins from their opening three matches with a strong second half performance that was too much for Newquay Reserves in an early season Division 1 East derby fixture played at a damp Cargoll Road.

The home side made three changes from their previous win – Brooker, Thompson and Owen London all returning to the starting line up with Smith and Kinsella coming back for the first time this season to add strength to the bench.

Newlyn opened the scoring after 7 minutes when a shot saw the Newquay keeper parry the ball in the path of the onrushing Owen London who stabbed the ball home. The visitors started to enjoy periods of possession with Carne trying to influence the midfield battle but was well marshalled by Brooker and Thompson.

Newlyn’s wide players of Manning and Owen London were working tirelessly out wide and Newlyn could have doubled their lead but for some dogged defending. However on 34 minutes an innocuous ling kick forward was flicked on by a Newquay attacker only for Preece to beat the onrushing Prentice in the Newlyn goal to the ball to lob into an empty net.

Just before half time Newlyn’s Jake Watson was played in down the left wing by Will Perry and he cut inside, passing to Owen London who was able to take a touch before passing the ball into the far corner to restore Newlyn’s lead. With seconds left in the half Ross London was fouled wide on the right wing, Brooker’s out swinging free-kick was met by Ash Bradshaw who saw his thunderous header canon back off the crossbar to end the half.

Newlyn introduced Sam Eglinton at the interval and were rewarded with another goal immediately from the re start when a corner was partially cleared to Bradshaw who turned the ball back into the area for Ross London to open his account firing home with his left foot.

Newquay again reduced the arrears when a ball from the right was played in to the forward who appeared to be in an offside position before squaring for George Brown to tap home at the far post despite Newlyn’s appeals for the earlier offside.

On 63 minutes Eglinton won the ball and played it out to Ross London who held the ball up and laid it back to Watson who played a defence splitting ball into the path of Manning – bursting in between two defenders and debating the Newquay goalkeeper to the ball before being upended in the area for a stonewall penalty. Ross London grabbed the ball and duly dispatched the spot kick.

Bradshaw scored Newlyn’s fifth goal on 84 minutes when he met Sonny Summers-Evans left footed free-kick to head down and into the goal at the far post. Manning completed the rout on the stroke of full time when he side footed home from Summer-Evans pass off Eglinton’s pinpoint long pass.

The result saw Newlyn continue their unbeaten start to the season but they will be under no illusion that it is still very early days with lots of more tough fixtures to come in this competitive division.
