SAINTS KNOCKED OUT OF EVELY CUP IN FIRST ROUND.

Saints Sports News1 Sep 2024 - 11:54

Below par Newlyn fail to take chances with key players out.

The cup encounter saw both teams currently in top spot in their respective divisions and it was Scott Kemp’s 81st minute tap-in that gave Dobwalls Reserves victory in a George Evely Cup First Round tie with St Newlyn East at Lantoom Park.

Having already lost key players on left back Will Perry and Harry Mugford to work and illness on the morning of the match, Newlyn were dealt a further blow when in-form attacker Owen London rolled his ankle in the pre-match warm up and was not able to take part in the game.

The Saints led a tight contest through Dan Ball, who opened the scoring on 12 minutes when a long kick from goalkeeper Nathan Prentice was headed on by Jake Watson for Ball to react quickest – bursting past two defenders to finish low to the home goalkeeper’s left.

The home side responded immediately and equalised within two minutes as Newlyn cheaply gave away possession just inside their own half and Gaynor was fed the ball on the edge of the penalty area to fire in off a post past Prentice.

Newlyn had a golden opportunity to retake the lead on 16 minutes when Chris Sturgess picked out Ross London who made a run in behind the defender, taking it around the onrushing keeper but his shot from a tight angle was cleared of the line by a covering defender.

A Dobwalls free kick was smothered by Prentice before London again was in the right place but his run saw him meet Ball’s cross slightly ahead and he could only place his shot from close wide of the post.

The second half saw Newlyn introduce debutant Owen Nichols for Dan Ball but it was the home side who took the lead just 5 minutes after the re start. Newlyn Captain Jack Thompson stretched to meet a header but his clearance fell to a Dobwalls player who fed their midfielder who ran past two Newlyn players and around the advancing Prentice to square the ball to Humagain to tap in, unmarked in the middle of the goal, from 2 yards out.

With 20 minutes remaining Newlyn hit both post and then crossbar in the space of a few seconds. Jay Manning passed the ball inside to Watson who took a touch before smashing a shot of the base of the post with the keeper stranded. The rebound fell to Nichols who side footed a powerful strike from 16 yards that cannoned off the underside of the crossbar and was cleared away.

With 6 minutes remaining Newlyn pushed payers forward to try and find the elusive equaliser but had to leave gaps at the back in doing so and it was from a “carbon copy” of their second goal that the home side scored a third when substitute Kemp was given a tap in from close range when unmarked.

Newlyn continued to press and in added on time were rewarded when central defender Simon Baulch – now playing as a striker – had his shirt pulled from a Newlyn corner that saw the referee award Newlyn a penalty that London duly scored from.

Unfortunately this came to late for Newlyn who will undoubtedly be disappointed in the result and their performance on the day but can also have no complaints about the final result that saw Dobwalls progress into the next round.
